Year of Release: 2012
Director: Josh Trank
Starring: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan

“Yes, it was the black guy this time!”

What would you do with superpowers if you had them? Most people would like to say that they would fight crime or make the world a better place. I have a feeling that if anyone actually got powers, they would have a reaction similar to the characters of Steve, Andrew, and Matt [at least from the beginning/middle of the movie].

The boys, once they find a substance that grants them telekinesis, play with their new powers as if they had a super cool new toy. They build their way up to moving cars and [spoiler alert] playing football in the sky.

I have heard some complaints about the style of the movie itself [“found footage” full of shaky hand-held camera shots], but I enjoyed the format. It was not exactly documentary style, but it helped to create a different mood. We only saw what Andrew wanted us to see, which was the state of his life at the time and how terrible it was for him. That allowed his later transformation to be understandable, if not necessary.

I remember seeing a teaser for this movie and thinking “Well, that looks … interesting, I guess.” Then, I saw a trailer for the movie and my actual interest was piqued. I am very glad that I saw it.

To Sum Up: Unless you are easily nauseated by shaky-cam movies [Cloverfield, Blair Witch, home movies] or well-written storylines, you should see this. However, if you watch this movie for the first time after watching the film “Carrie”, you will find more than one similarity between the two.
